Traumatic Experience
Evie: The Echo Condition is a game I’ve been developing for quite a while now spanning multiple game engines and even graphical styles. The story is an outward expression of my family’s experience when my son was diagnosed with cancer at 2 years of age and is told with no dialogue. Now leveraging Unity, there’s a demo available on Steam and this has been a very fulfilling project that’s not only put my game design skills to the test but also allowed me to process and grieve the years that my son was going through cancer treatment. Notable areas of development include:
Creating the first prototype from scratch in Construct 2 where I proved out the core gameplay mechanics.
Porting most assets from the prototype into various 3D engines before settling on an HD-2D graphical style similar to Octopath Traveler.
Leveraging asset packs for some characters and most environments, then customizing them to match the look and aesthetic of Evie - creating all game worlds.
Creating all of the animations for gameplay and cinematics, and for purchased assets I’m adding additional animations where necessary after updating the sprites to match the look of the game.
Developed a unique combat system that’s heavily inspired by games like God of War and Hyper Light Drifter, but mixed with a bit of the Castlevania GBA games for magic/special abilities.
This has been quite a journey and I’ve had a friend who’s helped in development along the way, creating all of the awesome music and pushing me to go bigger with storytelling whenever possible (among many other things). Even though this isn’t my first indie game, I wanted to prove to myself that I could develop a fully realized action game from scratch that has actual depth to accompany its engaging systems and a world that people will genuinely want to explore.
