Mobile Development
This was my first indie game, and my close friend teamed up with me to help out with narrative and produce all of the fun music for Buddy Bot. I wanted to produce something that took inspiration from Mega Man, Contra, and Mario while being highly accessible on mobile phones. As such, the game was entirely designed around only needing one finger at any given time as I refused to implement any type of cumbersome “virtual touch control scheme” or anything like that. Reviews were pretty positive upon release and I’m still proud of the amount of content we produced and much replay value we were able to fit in to such a tiny download. Notable features of Buddy Bot include:
All sprites and assets were 100% custom made.
A unique control scheme that allowed players to play with one hand and kept the action fast paced and fluid - the goal was to make something just as fun and engaging as a Mega Man style game on the GBA, but take advantage of the strengths of an iPhone at the time.
Entirely created in Construct 2.
A compelling, if silly storyline that resonated better than expected with most reviewers at the time - we really emphasized rewarding the player after completing each major section of the game with some fun cinematics and dialogue.
Lots of levels and biomes, each world concluded with a uniquely themed boss fight - if the player collected enough “Happy Coins” they would be rewarded with a new challenge world with brand new levels to try out to prove their mastery.
